For many Evangelical Christians, a pilgrimage to Israel is a deeply transformative experience. But did you know that Greece, too, holds profound biblical significance? When planning your next Faith Journey to the Holy Land, consider stopping in Greece and visiting Thessaloniki (just a short flight from Tel Aviv) for an additional inspiring experience. Here, history and Scripture come alive, offering a powerful opportunity to deepen your faith and connect with the early Apostolic missionary spirit.
Sar-El Tours invites you to embark on a life-changing journey, seeing the Bible come alive while visiting Thessaloniki’s archeological and biblical treasures. Here, you will walk in the footsteps of the Apostle Paul and uncover the spiritual power, dedication, and passion that propelled the early Church.
BIBLICAL LEGACY OF THESSALONIKI
Thessaloniki holds a special place in Christian history as a key location in the ministry of the Apostle Paul. His letters to the early Thessaloniki Church strengthened the doctrinal foundations of the Christian Faith as it gained momentum and spread throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. The city is prominently mentioned in the New Testament, and rich doctrinal and eschatological insights are found in Paul’s two epistles to the Thessalonian early disciples.
- Acts 17:1-9 recounts Paul’s arrival in Thessaloniki during his second missionary journey. The Scriptures tell us that Paul preached in the city’s Jewish synagogue for three consecutive Sabbaths, persuading many Jews and God-fearing Gentiles to believe in Jesus the Messiah and to embrace His message of salvation. As it is written, “… some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.”
Naturally, opposition arose, and a local mob was stirred up against the messengers of the Good News. Being interrogated by the Roman authorities, Paul and Silas were forced to flee to Berea as “… the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea.” However, the seeds of Faith sown in Thessaloniki bore much fruit, and a significant church community was raised up after Paul’s departure.
- The Epistles of First and Second Thessalonians, Paul’s letters to the disciples in this city, are among the earliest New Testament writings. Both letters are rich with encouragement, doctrinal teachings, and eschatological hope. In fact, the very hope of the believers’ resurrection from the dead is mentioned by the Apostle in chapter four of 1-Thessalonians, saying, “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus, we shall always be with the Lord.”
- Thessaloniki is mentioned in Philippians 4:16 when the Apostle gives thanks for the generosity of the Philippian Church supporting him while he was ministering in Thessaloniki.
- And last, we find out in Romans 15:19 that Paul’s ministry in the region of Macedonia, where Thessaloniki is located, was effective and fruitful in spreading the Good News of Messiah to the Gentile world.
Leading your group through the narrow and ancient streets that Paul once walked, Christian pilgrims gain an unparalleled connection to these biblical truths while finding inspiration and encouragement for their own spiritual journey.

BIBLICAL SITES TO EXPLORE IN THESSALONIKI
Sar-El Tours has crafted a faith-building itinerary that highlights the most significant biblical and historical sites in Thessaloniki and its surrounding areas.
1. The Ancient Agora and Forum
Located in the heart of Thessaloniki, this site was the bustling center of commerce and culture in the First Century A.D. Standing amid the archeological excavations of the heart of the ancient city, visitors can imagine the dynamic interactions that took place here as the Apostle and his early disciples proclaimed the Good News of Messiah to the city’s mostly pagan residents (Acts 17:1-4).
2. The Church of St. Demetrius (Hagios Demetrios)
Dedicated to Thessaloniki’s patron saint, this beautiful basilica is built on the foundations of an ancient Christian house of worship going back to the city’s earliest Christian days. While its main association is with the 4th-century martyr St. Demetrius, the church offers rare insights into the early Christian presence in the city all the way back to Paul’s apostolic ministry.
3. The Vlatadon Monastery
Tradition holds that this serene monastery, founded in the 14th century, stands by the location where Paul preached some of his earliest messages to the Thessalonians. The peaceful surroundings make it an ideal place for prayer and group devotionals as the pilgrims reflect on the apostolic instructions of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, saying, “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”
4. The Arch of Galerius and Rotunda
Constructed to honor the Roman emperor Galerius who reigned during the early years of the fourth Century A.D., these impressive structures give the visiting pilgrims a glimpse into the Greco-Roman world into which Paul introduced the Good News of Messiah. Over the centuries, the Rotunda served as both a pagan temple and a Christian church at different times, embodying the challenging transition from pagan idolatry to the faith of the One True God.
5. Ancient Berea (Veria)
A short drive from Thessaloniki brings your group to Berea, where Paul found a more receptive audience after fleeing Thessaloniki where the new faith was resisted and persecuted. The famous “Bema of Paul,” the risen platform holding public debates and formal proclamations, commemorates Paul’s preaching to the noble Bereans who diligently studied the Scriptures to confirm his message.
This archeological site is a powerful reminder of the importance of biblical studies and honest scriptural discernment. As it is written, “Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Therefore, many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.” (Acts 17:10-12).
